Stephen M. Smith, DDS, FAGD
Meet Dr. Smith
There is never a dull moment when it comes to dentistry. I get to meet a lot of special people who each bring unique needs and challenges to the practice. I like feeling tired at the end of the day because that means I have put in a hard day’s work of improving my patients' lives.
I attended Woodberry Forrest School from 1969-1971 and began my formal education at Emory College. I graduated from there with my Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Biology in 1975. I then went to Emory Dental School for my Doctorate of Dental Surgery, graduating in 1979.
Continuing Education and Professional Affiliations
I am committed to providing my patients the best treatments available. This means that I must stay up-to-date with the latest developments in oral healthcare. I make sure that each new technique provides care that meets my high standards first. I try to take over 100 hours of continuing education courses each year, and I most recently focused on conscious sedation and general dentistry. I have also passed my fellowship exam.
A big part of my commitment to quality is being involved with the professional community. I have taken on major roles with numerous professional organizations, including:
- Academy of General Dentistry – North Carolina Vice-President
- Doctors for Oral Sedation
- American Dental Society
- Carteret County Dental Society
I am the kind of dentist who goes out of the way to educate patients about their treatment details. My passion is to help fearful and anxious patients get over their fears and trust dentists. I am especially interested in helping patients who are recovering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or recovering from other forms of abuse. I provide compassionate care that does not judge people based on their fears or history. I understand how difficult life can be, and I work to help make it enjoyable again.
Outside the Office
I was born in Greensboro but have settled down in Morehead City. I have gladly carved out a good home here over that last 30 years. I am happily married with one child nearing the end of her own formal education. I have three dogs and one horse. I enjoy hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and growing citrus plants.
I am heavily involved in my community, doing all I can to contribute and help lift it up. I am on the board for Habitat for Humanity and Carteret Community College. I also volunteer my professional services through the Baptist Men’s Church Dental Bus and am a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of Morehead City.
