Sedation Dentistry
Mission Statement
Our Mission is to Successfully Treat High-Fear Patients Using Sedation
If you have a lot of fear about receiving dental treatment, you are not
alone. It is a well-known fact that 50% of our population doesn't go to
a dentist regularly.
Wake Up to a Beautiful Smile
If you are experiencing a lot of fear and anxiety about your dental
treatment, we invite you to read some testimonials from a few of our
patients who have successfully completed their treatment and have
overcome what they felt to be insurmountable fear.
Patient Testimonials
We are continually adding new patient testimonials regarding our
sedation techniques. Please feel free to read them on our Sedation
Testimonials page.
The
Sedation Standard
Physicians have already set the standard of treating patients using
sedation in the U.S. over the past 30 years. It is nothing new to
patients for operations on knees, feet, wrists, ears, noses, everything.
As one lady told me the other day, "I had to go in for an MRI (a type of
X-ray) and I was very nervous so my doctor gave me some sedation."
Using Sedation in Dentistry
Decision
The only thing standing between you and getting the dental care you want
is a couple of tablets of medication. It couldn't be simpler.
Type of Sedation
The sedation we utilize is oral sedation (pills.) We use pills for
several reasons:
- Many of our patients are needle phobic so they would not like to
be told that we must use a needle to sedate them.
- With oral sedation, we can work on patients for a longer period
of time.
- Oral sedation is very safe.
- The pills stay in a patient's system for several hours after the
appointment, so we get few complaints of pain after procedures are
completed.
Safety
The reason that we use this oral sedation technique is because of its
safety.
How
You Will Feel
As you can read in our patient's letters of testimony, their perception
of this conscious sedation technique is they feel they have slept
through the appointment.
Sedation Training
The dentist at Coastal Dentistry was trained in sedation dentistry
techniques by Dr. Pezdek in Raleigh. Our dentist keeps current with
continuing education on conscious sedation. He received additional
training with Dr. Michael Silverman DDS in Philadelphia, P.A. in July
2001, and is a member of DOCS (Doctors Organization for Conscious
Sedation). He has obtained in 2007 a Fellowship status in the DOCS
organization by his commitment to CE over the last 5 years.
Your First Visit
1-2
Appointments or 8-10?
General dentistry is very time consuming. Patients with complex dental
problems are often depressed when told it will take 8-10 appointments
over a period of several months to fix their teeth. This type of plan
most often ends in failure for fearful patients who have been hurt by
dentists in the past. They will go for one or two appointments to get
out of pain and abandon the remaining treatment until they are in pain
again.
First
Appointment Procedure
When you come into our office for the first time, usually already having
completed the medical history and patient information, you will be
greeted by our friendly staff, and Dr. Smith will interview you
privately. The doctor will talk with you about the problems you have had
in the past and what your specific fears are. After the doctor has
reviewed your medical history with you and addressed any concerns you
wish to discuss, he will do a visual exam of your teeth.
